Verde Azul was hired by a group of Mozambican investors to carry out pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, as well as plantation tests for the development of the banana and mango agro-industry for export.

The work involved land identification and legalization of approximately 230 hectares of land, including DUAT for agro-industrial production.

Verde Azul also implemented studies to evaluate the viability of bananas and other fruit production, mobilized a team and supervised the detailed analysis of the soil.

Verde Azul collaborated with the company Chiquita to collect data on precipitation, climate, social and environmental restrictions.

Verde Azul developed mitigation strategies, as well as negotiated with local authorities and communities.

Verde Azul carried out studies on water storage strategies in collaboration with a South African group, Crookes Brothers and initiated the legalization of land use rights for 1000 hectares of land areas for additional crops (DUAT acquisition), as part of its growth strategy.

The general objective of this project was to support the Government of Angola to understand the HIV epidemic among the target populations, through a basic survey of behavioral and serological surveillance (BSS) supported by the CDC. These BSS were made with two main populations: long distance truck drivers, and prisoners.

The specific objectives of the study were:

  • Examine attitudes, behaviors and perceptions of risks related to HIV and STDs among truck drivers, as well as among male prisoners and prison officials;
  • Estimate the prevalence of HIV and syphilis in the population studied;
  • Develop the Ministry of Health’s internal capacity to implement subsequent BSS surveys among populations most at risk for HIV;
  • Carry out the results of tuberculosis screening and recommendations for medical assistance to prisoners.

Verde Azul implemented, mobilized and trained field workers and collected data, and verified the quality of the data collected.

In the second phase, Verde Azul analyzed and interpreted the results.

The final report included a proposal and a curriculum outline for a training program for conducting and interpreting BSS research results.

Evaluate the way of delimiting the community lands of execution made by ITC and associates. Under the support of the land administration community in the provinces of Gaza and Tete.

The objective of CLUF is to guarantee the rights and benefits to communities over the use of land and natural resources, with the objective of rural economic development.

The program follows an approach guided by the search for innovative solutions that guarantee the rights of communities to land, and proposes to play a facilitating role in the connection between communities and producer associations with potential investors, such as:

  • Participation in the delimitation of community lands;
  • Identify possible conflicts in the delimitation process;
  • Propose improvements in the data collection and management system;
  • Perform zoning based on information collected in the field and satellite image;
  • Prepare a pre-proposed support for one and other SPGCs for a better discussion with DNTF ITC;
  • Management committees.

Implementation of the environmental impact assessment and environmental management plan to mitigate the impact of the investment and assess the risk of deterioration of air and water in relation to an industrial development in Maputo, Mozambique. The contract was concluded by SGS. Verde Azul carried out an environmental impact assessment and developed an environmental management plan and a monitoring academy for SGS in the first phase.

Verde Azul assisted a group of investors to acquire the land use right document, from areas of cultivated land for the production of agro industrial bananas for export in the provinces of Sofala and Nampula.

Verde Azul implemented preliminary studies to assess the viability of banana production in terms of yield performance.

This involved the mobilization and coordination of soil studies, contacts with provincial and local authorities (SPGC and Economic Activities) and an environmental assessment of tracking and analyzing soil suitability and climatic conditions, as well as testing a number of varieties and of various planting technologies.

The main objective of the consultancy was to design and develop a Strategic Plan for the Management of the Network of Organizations to support HIV / AIDS programs in Mozambique for the period 2010-2014.

The deliverables of this project involved several strategic documents and activities:

a) The diagnosis based on the document review;
b) Communication strategy for political dialogue (Lobby and Advocacy);
c) Organizational Development Plan (Communication, Coordination and Training);
d) Training for support services to be provided directly to the recipient (integrated health services);
e) Institutional assessment of financial sustainability;
f) Market positioning analysis and interviews with key people from other organizations (CNCS, MISAU, Partners, Women’s Forum, LDH) to measure the external point of view in relation to MONASO’s strategic positioning;
g) Definition of MONASO’s strategic pillars through a series of participatory sessions, where the role of Verde Azul was that of a facilitator;
h) Validation of the diagnosis through a series of presentations and feedback from the Board of Directors (Draft 1);
i) Definition of a revised version of the Organization’s Vision and Mission;
j) Facilitating the development of strategic indicators.

These results were presented in a final report and used as a working document by MONASO for its institutional development.

The objectives of the Development Project of the Quirimbas National Park (PNQ) were elaborated as follows:

1- Conception and proposal of three options for the institutional configuration of the PNQ for the government, donors and other interested parties, taking into account the current and future institutional and legal framework, in which these options can be developed. A seminar was held to present the strengths and weaknesses of the various options and to agree on the way forward.

2 – After choosing the final proposal, Verde Azul provided the following services:

  • legislative, procedural and technical recommendations for the implementation of an institutional framework;
  • legal and institutional options that work within the scope of existing legislation and national conservation policy still under consideration;
  • A trust fund concept has been proposed for protected areas in Mozambique.

From the work established in 2002, the following conclusions can be drawn:

  • establish an effective management of the park in such a way that its conservation goals are achieved. The study included important contributions from the discussions that took place on the legal and institutional configuration for the park and the second phase of the project. He highlighted the different institutional models already in place in Mozambique and which have benefited other experiences in the region and across Africa.

The proposed options were innovative, seeking, whenever possible, to operate within the prevailing political and legislative framework.

An action plan was presented involving pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses and risks, as well as mitigation actions that should be part of the implementation plans and strategic planning.

The team designed a roadmap for implementation, including all legislative, procedural and technical measures.

Capacity Building of Rural Communities for Participatory Development in the District of Matutuíne

The aim of this project was to provide support to contribute to poverty reduction in rural communities in Matutuíne, Maputo Province.

The aim of the project was vulnerable families and to identify places where communities have difficulties in breaking the cycle of poverty.

The project involved a participatory promotion of sustainable rural development initiatives.

Deliverables included:

  1. a) evaluation of the dynamics of an association called Pfukani;
  2. b) assessment of the sustainability of the Pfukani association;
  3. c) coordination with community stakeholders, VIDA team staff and the Development Center;
  4. d) submission of proposals for sustainable options aimed at increasing local production inside and outside production areas and for improving productivity and efficiency;
  5. e) strengthening the capacities of rural communities to create associations and to improve their marketing activities;
  6. f) increased communication between and within rural communities;
  7. g) proposal for decision-making tools and a communication strategy.

These instruments were developed to be used as lobby and advocacy with stakeholders, for dialogues with the government, with contacts from the private sector, as well as in dialogue with other representatives of the community.

The project proposal was later financed by VIDA, and reached around 400 families with direct support, and another 2,000 families were indirectly benefited as they improved their income.

Production of Unrefined Organic Sugar and Sugar Cane in Cabo Delgado Province

Verde Azul developed, in the province of Cabo Delgado, a commercial project, of small size of sugar cane, vertically integrated.

This project was initiated through research studies on varieties of sweet sorghum and sugar cane for a Swedish investor in the area of Bioenergy. The work carried out by Verde Azul involved the following actions:

  • the selection of a suitable location;
  • the development of the feasibility study;
  • the mobilization of personnel and training;
  • application of land, water, environment and other licenses;
  • certification of the area by ECOCERT for the production of sugarcane and sweet sorghum, as well as other seeds;
  • the processing of organic sugar;
  • pre-certification by the RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials);
  • identification of investment partners;
  • funding requests and grant mobilization;
  • presentation of business plans and implementation of the project in coordination with AGRICANE (a South African consulting group specialized in the production of sugarcane and with a long history in Mozambique).

In December 2014, sugarcane seed plantations of various varieties suitable for the location had already been established and the factory was completed so that the first batches of sugar tests could already be produced.

Analysis of Biodiversity and Technical Support for the Preservation and Restoration of Tropical Forests and Biological Diversity

Verde Azul carried out an evaluation of:

(1) the current status of biodiversity and forest conservation in Mozambique;

(2) the actions needed in Mozambique to conserve tropical forests and biological diversity, and;

(3) the extent to which the proposed actions for USAID / Mozambique support respond or could respond to needs.

The assessment was intended to serve as a planning tool for USAID / Mozambique and a step towards integrating environmental issues into its existing programs and proposals (integration).

Verde Azul has committed to provide:

1) logistical assistance;

2) coastal context / knowledge for site visits;

3) Report on the institutional environment in Mozambique, as well as entry to a country profile in four areas:

  • mapping and evaluation of the physical environment, land use and the current state of biodiversity and forest resources and the causes of agriculture- land degradation and actions needed for the future;
  • current assessment of the local economy and prospects for potential growth over the short and medium term;
  • existing and planned legal institutional environment – government, Ministry of Environment, NGOs and donor programs, including a brief assessment of the effectiveness, strengths and weaknesses of existing institutions;
  • activities that contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources.
